Say the word "fort" and most people envision guns, block houses, concrete bunkers and hidden tunnels. The reality is that Fort Foster is a municipally owned day park on Portsmouth Harbor and is more than what it sounds. Sure, there are old gun emplacements and concrete bunkers (sorry no hidden tunnels or left over guns) but the location offers a beautiful and quite strategic view of Portsmouth Harbor. The military did a wonderful job of leaving behind some evidence of its possession of the southernmost tip of Maine. But, the more interesting stories belong to the things one can no longer see. Most of the fort's military history can be found on the sites available via the links below. The park is more than its military past. This site endeavors to create a more complete story of the park's past.
